Decatur Georgia was founded in 1823, and was named in honor of naval Commander Stephen Decatur a popular American hero of that time. Decatur was a hero in the War of 1812, and was the Commander of the ship the United States, he defeated the Macedonia, one of Great Britain's finest ships. Three years after his death in 1820, the City of Decatur was named in his honor. Commodore Decatur died in a duel in 1820.

Decatur is the second oldest municipality in the Atlanta metro area and it is the County seat of DeKalb County. Decatur is six miles east of Atlanta's central business district. It is a smaller community with approximately 18,000 residents and 8,000 households.

Historically downtown Decatur's stands courthouse square served as the community gathering place. Even to this day, it continues to be the heart of the community. The Courthouse on the Square houses an interesting museum covering DeKalb County history and Civil War memorabilia, and visitors to Decatur can also find helpful information at the Welcome Center located inside the front door of this old Courthouse.

The city of Decatur can be proud of its' success in preserving heritage, yet incorporating new development and encouraging economic growth. The City is surrounded by historic neighborhoods that reflect a variety of architectural styles, and construction. The City has a strong sense of community and a nationally recognized public school system which continues to draw young families to the City of Decatur. Decatur's has remained true to its vision of maintaining its small town character, and yet hosts a vibrant retail center and a courthouse square. All in all, it is a great place to live!
